    Another subpoena story (True)

Post by wuzfuz on Mon Dec 20, 2010 12:10 am

Back in the mid 60s while serving in the Toronto Police as a detective, my partner and I were on the midnight shift and patrolling in the downtown area of the city.

A call came over the radio reporting that a man was attempting to steal a car Eward St.. We were in the vicinity and quickly arrived on the scene and arrested him.

The complainant had called from the apartment of a girlfriend that was upstairs above her Beauty Salon. A separate door led to the upstairs apartment. It was Summer and the window was open. He had heard a noise and looked out and saw what was happening

Before leaving the scene, i went upstairs to interview the witness and recognized him as a well known member of the local Mafia.
He and his brother operated a car-wash not far from this location.
He was a married man and of course did not want his wife to learn about the incident. I knew he didn't live there but he told me he did.

Before the thief came to trial, I knew that he would not voluntarily appear in court as a witness so obtained a subpoena requiring him to appear in court as a material witness.

At about 6AM a few days before the trial, I went to the Salon to serve him with the subpoena. The street door to the apartment was unlocked and I walked upstairs and knocked on the apartment door.

A female voice called out. "Who's there" I replied in a loud voice,"The Police" She replied." Come on in and stop your kidding.
Opened the door and walked down the hall to her open bedroom door.
She was sitting naked as a Jaybird on the edge of the bed obviously expecting him. I said "I got a subpoena to serve on your boyfriend. She shrieked "He doesn't live here." I quickly turned around and retreated back outside.

I wasn't too concerned because it was a petty offense and in the event the thief plead guilty to the charge.

Incidentally. Many years later the boyfriend was found shot dead in the trunk of his car at the Toronto airport.

    Judged by a different court.

    AMEN!!

Police work is often dangerous, were you happy to retire wuzfuz

Loved my job but it sure wasn't as dangerous as today's violent world.

There was generally lots of humor in the various foibles of human nature and the way they were acted them out

Loved helping good people in helping to solve problems, large or small.

Having a heavy heart when people get seriously hurt in accidents etc. and having to notify next of kin that they are the hospital or have die unexpectedly when they are not at home When children are involved it is especially difficult'

If I had it to do it all over,I'd do it all over again.
