Extra Postage For Oversize Christmas Cards

Post by Lee on Wed Dec 15, 2010 1:51 am

I went to the Shopper's outlet today to buy stamps and mail my cards out.

They were just regular boxed cards but the lady informed me that they looked over the size limit.

Huh!!!! Then she pulls out a grid thing to measure the card and it is fractionally over the line and she said that to mail those cards would be $1 rather than 57 cents. She went on to say that it says on the boxes of card if they are oversize they require extra postage. If they went to the next line on the grid the postage would be $1.22 per card.

I have never heard of this before, and she said that not too many people know about it and they just go ahead, put on the regular postage and the cards come back if they are caught.

I told her I would take my chances and go with the regular postage and that this is the reason that E-cards are becoming more popular.

I did not know this and I hope I can remember for next year.
The few cards I send were mailed at least a week ago and a couple
of them were quite large. I had stamps at home and then just dropped
them in the slot at the post office.
I hope they get where I wanted them to.

I don't mail Christmas cards anymore. In this day when we have unlimited calling plans, I phone. It is a lot nicer to speak with someone.

About a month ago I inquired about having the PO hold my mail for a week because I had planned on going away. They informed me it would cost $20 for two weeks. That astonished me. Then again when someone was tampering with my mailbox at the end of the driveway, I inquired about getting a box at the post office. I had one before I moved and it was free. To get one here, they informed me I had to pay $150 for the year. Is there anything that is free from the P.O.?

Same way in the states too.

    Cost is getting ridiculous.

    Further to mailing Christmas Cards............

On my favorite local Talk Radio Station....CJOB Winnipeg....there was a discussion one day in the New Year about parcels and greeting cards arriving late, and a spokesperson from the post offfice said that Greeting Cards which were sent in Red and Green envelopes had to be "hand-scanned" because their equipment couldn't read the writing on the envelopes as clearly as the white and pastel colors...therefore...taking more time for the recipient to receive them. My interpretation of her explanation may be a little "off"....but that was the gist of it. Makes sense to me, now that I think of it....and so from now on...I will be careful about the color of the envelopes that enclose my greeting cards.

Remember when we had all the different colours of toilet paper? Coloured envelopes might go the same path but why haven't they already?
