What is a Boomer or Baby Boomer?

Post by islandgrl on Tue Apr 20, 2010 10:22 am

Have you ever wondered who coined the phrase and if you were one? I was sort of curious so I looked it up in Wikipedia. It is ok to be curious if you are a Boomer. Very Happy

Landon Jones, who coined the term "baby boomer" in his book Great Expectations: America and the Baby Boom Generation, defined the span of the baby-boom generation as extending from 1946 to 1964, when annual births declined below 4,000,000. They have since returned to higher levels in the "echo boom."

When I first came across the phrase I thought it was for people past 60 years and who took off like a rocket. Very Happy So much for an overactive mind.

A baby boomer is a person who was born during the demographic Post-World War II baby boom. The term "baby boomer" is sometimes used in a cultural context, and sometimes used to describe someone who was born during the post-WWII baby boom. Therefore, it is impossible to achieve broad consensus of a precise definition, even within a given territory. Different groups, organizations, individuals, and scholars may have widely varying opinions on what constitutes a baby boomer, both technically and culturally. Ascribing universal attributes to a broad generation is difficult, and some observers believe that it is inherently impossible. Nonetheless, many people have attempted to determine the broad cultural similarities and historical impact of the generation, and thus the term has gained widespread popular usage.

Their definition goes on to say:

The United States Census Bureau considers a baby boomer to be someone born during the demographic birth boom between 1946 and 1964.[8] The Census Bureau is not involved in defining cultural generations.

So what really makes a Boomer and are you one?

I am a boomer and one of the oldest of them. I was born July 8, 1946. Those of us who were born that year probably graduated high school the year the boomers stopped being born. Fascinating to see when you turn '64 around you have '46. 1964 was the year I married my navy sweetheart. Strangely enough we would have been married 46 years the last day of May. He was not a boomer but born right before the war began in 1941.

Interesting topic islandgrl. I am curious to see how many others can say they are a boomer.

I think there is another boomer generation that began again. Not sure the year perhaps with the ending of the Vietnam conflict. Maybe someone would like to google that for us.

I can't say I'm a boomer but I'm close LOL I'm definitely not a zoomer. That's just a marketing ploy by Moses Znaimer to increase his readership to a higher income younger crowd.

I am a boomer. I was born in 1948. As far as I know a boomer was born just after the war ended. We are called boomers because the population boomed when the men came home from the war. The oldest boomers were born in 1946. What I heard is that it is people born between 1946 and 1956.

To read about all the folks who think they are Boomers, I guess when they reach my age. they will think that they were very early Bloomers and now just a Roomer about to be evicted from their home in this world.

All read with great interest by a mere 'yoof' on the other side of the pond; or maybe just 'the other side.' Sometimes feels the latter. Ah well, OAP pension day v.soon after our Public Holiday on Monday.
