If I had my complete compos mentis
I would be able to write a poem like this.
But I'm just a few brain cells short,
As I'm very sorry to report.
Some other day, I'll give it a try,
But for now, I have bigger fish to fry

    Glad, we know...
    Is twitchin' and itchin'
    She putters about
    And rhymes in her kitchen
In the back of her mind
    Not the menu ...so fine...
    But instead, she is thinkin'
    What rhymes with "dine".

    Glad's writing is meaningful
    With small frivolty
    Usually a message
    For you and for me
    She writes from her heart
    And so she is searching
    For words she'll reveal
    To each of us lurking...
    We're waiting and waiting
    For Gladdy to write
    Write what you will
    To us...you're jussssssssss'

    Gone Fishing

Post by daffyd on Sat Jul 16, 2011 8:12 am

    Gone Fishing.

I looked out of the window

    And witnessed an early dawn

Made a decision, to go fishing

    And forego cutting the lawn.

My fishing gear was quickly packed

So I set off down the lane,

    Huge clouds did soon assemble

    A prelude to heavy rain.

I made it to the river bank

Set up my rod and line

Baited my hook and made a cast

Whilst hoping the sun would shine.

    Instead I heard the thunder

And then saw the lightning flash,

The wind tore trees up by their root

And they then to earth did crash.

I lay prostrate upon the ground

Almost at one with the sodden grass

    Mumbling long forgotten prayers

Praying for that hurricane to pass.

    And pass it did....eventually

Wind abating from roar, to whine,

Trudging home I found my fishing rod

With a fat trout upon the line.

    Your fearful storm had past
So luckily the day you spent
Was not one of your last!
    Devouring your trout
    A pleasant end of day...
    Another day of fishing..
Will surely come your way!.....DaffyD!! Very Happy

Fishing? No, I might harpoon a whale
But I can tell you, of another tale.....

    A Crazy's Notion

The sun shone bright on that summer's day
When, to the beach I did wend my way.
I weaved through the traffic on that trip
    Concentrating, on that promised dip.
I perspired freely from every pore
As I made my way down to the shore.

The beach was crowded, from cliff to sea
With folks that thought the same as me.
I found a spot and spread my towel
Even though we were packed in, cheek by jowl.
The first blood, and victory, went to me
I'd secured a spot, but where's the sea?

The tide I'd noted was on the wane
Six more hours, before it turned again.
As the tide receded, so did my hope,
Who would think to bring a telescope?
I glanced around at would be bathers there
The girls well formed, men bronzed, chests bare.

I thought what will they think of me
For my bathing suit, covered neck to knee.
It was a relic from my past,
It's a shame that fashions never last.
I sighed, and to the sea did glance,
As for my hoped for dip, there was no chance.

I folded up my strip-ped towel
And left those bathers, packed cheek by jowl
And wended my weary sweat stained way
Back to the Home, to plan another day,
Wherein I could indulge my fancy free
Of a refreshing dip in that receding sea.
They should have told me at the Institute,
That one no longer bathes, in a full length suit!

    Just like Canute
    (An English king)
    I found the tide
    Does its own thing
    Ebbing, flowing
    In monotonous cycle
    Cares nought for me
    Nor dear St. Michael

    The Rhythm of Life

There is a rhythm in the universe that pulsates through-out us all there is a Power at our disposal if we could only breach that wall. If we could raise ourselves above the doubt that clouds our mind we’d be in tune with the rhythm of life, enjoy love of a different kind. For love is the great dynamic through which we attain all aims, but as mortals we reject this love, for more materialistic claims. Self satisfaction, self achievement, such ego brings nought but strife, we miss out on the beauty by not being at one with life.

There is a rhythm in our being, there is a Power within our soul, There is a Power within us all, we have it, on parole. It is the Power of instinct, which we bridle and restrain. To regain that rhythm that we have lost, we must learn to love again. We must trust our basic instincts, we must let the Power flow, we must denounce particularism, we must moderate our own ego. We must through love transform ourselves, be more humble in our ways if we are to regain the rhythm of life that will rejuvenate our days.

In this way we will experience the mercy and creativity of love, we draw down upon ourselves the Power from the cosmos up above. Our absolute faith and trust will attract the Power that we need to banish hate, misunderstanding, racialism and selfish greed. We are going to have to learn that we cannot live alone, if we would but open up our minds, love will melt those hearts of stone. Love that is free of self has this wondrous rhythmic Power once harnessed it will give us strength, even beyond our final hour.

Self-searching, self cleansing will show us wherein we’ve strayed. Self analysis of our ego will highlight all the mistakes we’ve made. Let the Sun shine inside of you, let it’s rays beam from your face, let the rhythm of life flow through you and make this world a better place. Let us do this thing together by sharing with our fellow man, the Love and Power within our souls, by doing what we can to stretch forth our arms in friendship, gather Love into our fold. Let us be as one with the universe,

Let the rhythm of life enfold

    THE FINAL INSPECTION

The soldier stood and faced God,
Which must always come to pass .
He hoped his shoes were shining,
Just as brightly as his brass .

    'Step forward now, you soldier,
How shall I deal with you ?
Have you always turned the other cheek ?
To My Church have you been true?'

The soldier squared his shoulders and said,
    'No, Lord, I guess I ain't .
Because those of us who carry guns,
    Can't always be a saint .

I've had to work most Sundays,
And at times my talk was tough .
    And sometimes I've been violent,
Because the world is awfully rough .

But, I never took a penny,
    That wasn't mine to keep . . .
Though I worked a lot of overtime,
When the bills got just too steep .

And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear .
    And sometimes, God, forgive me,
    I've wept unmanly tears .

    I know I don't deserve a place,
    Among the people here .
    They never wanted me around,
Except to calm their fears .

If you've a place for me here, Lord,
It needn't be so grand .
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't, I'll under stand .

There was a silence all around the throne,
Where the saints had often trod .
    As the soldier waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God .

    'Step forward now, you soldier,
You've borne your burdens well .
    Walk peacefully on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in Hell . '

There are people of a certain age that know about, and can remember 'The Clothesline' It preceded Facebook, Twitter, Text
and yet contained a great deal of information. It was delivered of an almost fatal blow when 'Tumble Driers' were invented.
For those of you who have no idea about which I am talking....let me explain with this poem, author unknown!

    THE CLOTHESLINE.

A clothesline was a news forecast, to neighbours passing by,
There were no secrets you could keep, when clothes were hung to dry.
It also was a friendly link, for neighbours always knew
If company had stopped on by, to spend a night or two.
    For then you'd see the "fancy sheets", and towels upon the line;
You'd see the "company table cloths", with intricate designs.

The line announced a baby's birth, from folks who lived inside,
As brand new infant clothes were hung, so carefully with pride!
The ages of the children could, so readily be known
By watching how the sizes changed, you'd know how much they'd grown!
    It also told when illness struck, as extra sheets were hung;
Then nightclothes, and a bathrobe too, haphazardly were strung..

It also said, "On vacation now", when lines hung limp and bare.
It told, "We're back!" when full lines sagged, with not an inch to spare!
New folks in town were scorned upon, if wash was dingy and grey,
As neighbours carefully raised their brows, and looked the other way.

But clotheslines now are of the past, for dryers make work much less.
Now what goes on inside a home, is anybody's guess!
I really miss that way of life, it was a friendly sign
When neighbours knew each other best.
By what hung out on that line.

    What happened to the poets
Those folk that deal in rhyme?
I've not seen a single verse
For a substantial amount o' time.
    This is the poet's corner
Where your rhythmic thoughts are sought
It has now been a coon's age and your contribution, nought?

    What is it you need?

    Time to Think

I was sitting here this evening, lounging in my favourite chair, when my mind, it took to wandering, snatching snippets from the air. The kaleidoscope of pictures were amazing to behold, until I honed in to just one thought, “Hey lad, you’re getting old!” For you see I had been reviewing things that had happened in my past, and when I’d brought myself up to date, that thought had been my last.

Time plus relativity, can mean a myriad of different things. Time when you are short of it, just flies as if on wings. Yet time, when you are waiting seems to walk with leaden feet, time for me now is just a measure to keep things nice and neat. For you see I have to fill each day, as many mortals do, with sleep and work and leisure time, I’m sure it’s the same for you.

Sleep for me is not easy, I have a hyperactive mind and after the chores of the day are done, I find it difficult to unwind. Leisure, well now that’s a laugh, how many activities are there for one? Unless you have a partner with whom can you share the fun? Oh yes you can come up with a thousand things, for someone like me to do, coupled with a thousand reasons and I’m sure for you they’re true.

But then that’s true for you dear friend, not necessarily me, for each of us are different with our own idiosyncrasies. It’s easy to advise someone from a position that’s safe and sound. What would YOU make of such advice when your spirit is on the ground? It happens, there are a few of us who ‘exist’ in this unnatural way. The reasons they are complex, but we get by....... day by day.

    The Rickshaw Man

    Impulse is a fresh horse
So ride him whilst you can
The future is an empty glass
Waiting to be filled, by man.
You must try and walk the narrow trail
    And not ride the shandryan.
Use wise the cloak of familiarity
    As does the rickshaw man.

Each hour is new and uncertain
Each day your own to fill
    Avoid the devouring limelight
    As does the small whippoorwill.
To the hungry, egg, is chicken
So to the poor give what you can
Hide not your spoor on the narrow trail
For who sees the rickshaw man?

When the paper lantern lights the road
    Walk not in crooked ways
Beseech the gods to walk with you
And watch o’er the sheep that strays.
The pack that hunts must share the kill
The lonely tiger hunts to plan
Running swiftly with both stealth and skill
    Just like the rickshaw man.

    THE BROKEN DRUM

    The leaden sky, lay heavy
    On that bleak autumnal day
When the drummer boy was ordered
    His battle drum to play.
The reveille that young boy sounded
Roused the soldiers from their sleep,
They made ready for the battle
And the rendezvous they must keep.

The dew lay heavy on their greatcoats,
Their breath vapourised in the air,
Whilst the greyness all around them
    Only deepened their despair.
    Another day had dawned
In this, the seige of Malacci,
How many more gallant fighting men
    Would stumble, fall and die?

    That day’s fighting started slowly
With a brief skirmish, here and there,
    Then cannon started pounding
The smell of gunpowder, filled the air.
Grapeshot screamed, and tore through living flesh
Cannon ball, did break their ranks.
Bayonet and sabre scythed a bloody way
Through the centre and both flanks.

The walls of the city, crumbled
Beneath this onslaught of shot and steel
    And that proud, bedraggled garrison
Was crushed, beneath the enemy heel.
When the battle sounds had dwindled
And the acrid smoke had cleared,
Both sides began to count the cost
It was more than they had feared.

    The victors, although jubilant
Their losses had struck them dumb.
The vanquished had but one soul left
A boy, WITH A BROKEN DRUM.

    To One Far Away.

May these thoughts of mine reach out to you
And rekindle memories we both shared,
May they reflect the consuming thought
Of a love, we long ago declared.
May the spark of my undying passion
Underline these things I have to say,
Oh how I wish that you were in my arms
Instead of being so far away.

The hand of fate has decreed it
There is nought I can do or say
To the one that holds my eternal love
To the one who's far away.

I exist now in a land of dreams
My only link whilst we're apart
I fashion them so that you're with me
Sharing the love within my heart.
    A heavy heart my darling
Nurturing a sorrow that won't go away
    The burden of our separation
    Increases ten fold every day.

The hand of fate has decreed it
There is nought I can do or say
To the one who holds my eternal love
To the one who's far away.

    I long for our re-union
I pray that soon that day will dawn
So that you may reach out with your tender touch
And make whole this heart that's torn.
For the love I have and hold for you
Surpasses more than mere words can say
It is the beacon that lights the path
To one who is far away.

One day we'll be back together
And by your side I'll once more lay
Till then my darling I send my love
    To one who's far away.
