Soiless potting mixtures and fungas gnats

Post by Willows on Wed Sep 15, 2010 12:19 pm

It's the time of year again, when I have to decide which plants I will bring indoors for the winter. I want to repot the plants with fresh new soil, but I dread the fungas gnats that come with the soiless potting mixtures, and I find soils such as topsoils too heavy.

I'm looking for suggestions that will serve my purpose, yet ....free me from the gnats whizzing by while I am relaxing with a cup of ....lidded and protected....coffee....etc..

Every year I would buy the expensive soil Shultz Moisture Plus and would have gnats. Never used to be like that. Last week, I bought what my garden center says they use to pot their plants. It is an organic potting soil. So today I bought a couple more bags. My better half thinks the plants won't survive unless we take the garden soil the plants are growning in. He potted a couple scotch bonnet pepper plants with the garden soil and so to be on the safe side I bought some Green Earth Insecticidal Soap. I mixed some in water then sprayed and watered the plants with it. I also repotted all my houseplants. (Wrong thing to do as Spring is the ideal time to repot. Very Happy )

I was at my sister's on Monday and she used the soap last week, so far no gnats and her plants looked great. I bought the same insecticidal soap. Pictures of the soil and insecticidal soap to follow.

Hmm sounds like a good product. I will see if it is sold here in the US.

Thanks for the tip, I will look into this for our indoor plants. We keep getting nats on the deck and in the house sometimes.
