    To boost energy levels and for good health, holistic nutritionist Joy McCarthy reccomends drinking it first thing in the morning, instead of coffee.

    1. Drink lemon and water on an empty stomach every morning. She advises that (unless you have an allergy) it's truly one of the simplest lifestyle changes that will improve overall health.

    Lemon is full of minerals that have an alkalinizing effect on the gut. (Coffee is acidifying)

    Detoxifying: Lemon is one of a handful of foods that enhances your liver's detoxifying pathways, similar to cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli and cauliflower. We can all benefit from simple ways to detoxify.

    Gut health: Lemon stimulates your liver to produce bile and bile is a carrier (along with fibre) of toxins. It also stimulates the stomach to produce hydrochloric acid, which gives the signal that you are hungry.

    2. Cut back on coffee. Not only is coffee a diuretic, meaning it makes you urinate more often leading to mineral losses and dehydration, but it gives you artificial energy. If you are experiencing energy highs and lows, cut back to no more than two coffees per day, before noon. Instead drink stimulating herbal teas such as ginger and peppermint. Green tea is another option for mornings as it still has caffeine, but more importantly, it's a wonderful source of antioxidants such as polyphenols.
