    Pepino Melon

Post by islandgrl on Thu May 03, 2012 6:58 pm

Today while in the grocery store I came across a fruit called pepino melon. I am always curious about trying new foods so I picked one up and wanted to know the price before I buy. At $4.49 per lb. that isn't cheap. So I had the cashier weigh it and it was $2.89 for this little fruit which was no bigger than an apple. Anyway, I asked her what it was like and she said shoppers have told her it was creamy. I took the name and came home to do some research.

It's a cross between a cantaloupe and honey dew melon. It is a relative of the cucumber. Hmmmm!! I may eventually buy one to try and save the seeds for planting if I like it enough.

    Check it out here

    Quite expensive for the size.
It would be interesting to see if this fruit would grow in your climate.

I think I would be able to grow it like any cucumber or melon. I don't think it would survive the Winter.
