    Goodbye penny

Post by oceanna on Fri Mar 30, 2012 10:57 pm

The one cent penny will be phased out in Canada and go the way of black and white TV
Will you miss the penny or think it's time it was retired?

I won't miss them as I find they add so much weight in my purse. I have a jar of them and will
roll them and deposit them in the credit union.

Now we will be throwing nickels in wishing wells. Laughing

I replied to this post yesterday but I guess it got lost in cyber space. Well I will miss it and I don't think it will benefit us. The retailers will round it off to the next dollar and all in the name of cutting costs by the government. Just the way of $1, $2 (granted the coins are heavier but more durable) and now the penny.

Whatever was $2.98 will become $3.00...and $5.97....will become $6.00....so right there...in those two transactions....whomever will have gained 5 cents, but maybe if the retailer prospers....so will the rest of the economy. It really is foolish to produce a coin that costs more to produce than it is worth.

I've collected pennies over the years in an 'inaccesible' piggy bank. Actually, it was a 'piggy' plastic lawn ornament that I'd decoupaged over to make it look like bronze. I'd cut a slit into the top and that was the only access to my 'piggy bank'.

So after this week's news about eliminating the penny, I cut out a hole in the bottom of my bank and emptied it into an accessible container, and then I bought a pack of penny coin-wrappers and I will give the whole kit and kaboodle to my grand-daughter to wrap and cash in at the bank. I started her off with several wrapped coins....but the rest is up to her. I want her to realize how much it takes to earn 50 cents in one roll of coins.

Consumers will loose out, but I'm glad to see it go.

Shall we conclude with Oceanna's witty comment....

Do we still have wishing wells. LOL It's almost a year since I saw one in the mall. Very Happy

I haven't seen a wishing well in a mall but have seen one on the grounds of a museum home and the grounds of a historical church not too many miles from where we live.

When I visit these interesting sites and pass the wishing wells I feel like I should toss in a coin and make a wish. Laughing
