    Percale Sheets

Post by sunnysideup on Mon Sep 26, 2011 12:03 am

Was shopping for some new sheets this week although I knew I could get them cheaper in Florida, I couldn't wait... I was surprised to find that there seems to be no such thing as percale anymore, the sales girl in Winners didn't know the word !!!

I ended up with a pair of Calvin Klein or something, with a 350 thread count, all cotton which I thought would be fine. I just washed them today and because my clothes line was down I put them in the dryer. They were all wrinkled and still needed ironing, and believe me, I don't iron anything unless I have to. If hubby is stupid enough to buy a shirt that needs ironing he does it himself. Very Happy

I've seen those sheets at the markets that say 800 thread count and some 1200 thread count, Egyptian cotton going for $20.00 in the U.S. $25 or $30. here, so intend to buy some more when I go down. Has anyone bought these, and do they need ironing, or are they a rip off ?

I don't iron much anymore. Sheets I get are usually cotton with 400 and above thread count. Anything less is just too thin and wears out faster. I like flannel sheets for winter because I like it warm and comfy. I need deep pocket sheets (18" deep) and they are quite expensive. I have a catalogue from Sears that have the flannel sheets, 600 thread count, on for $24. for the fitted. I think I will get a couple. Will pass on the flats as I have too many already.

Gosh....I never paid attention to thread count. I know one thing for sure.....I bought a set of sheets a year ago that it is a major chore to put the fitted one on the bed. It is too big on the sides but the corners are very tight to get on the mattress. I scream every time I use them. So I don't use them often.

BTW why iron sheets? They will just wrinkle the first time you lay on them.

I remember 65 years ago when we did not have a washing machine and my mother used a washboard and rinsed and rang out the laundry with her hands.

Couldn't do this with sheets so they went to the local Chinese laundry. All white sheets in those days and they came back ironed and wrapped in brown paper.

They gave you a ticket and you had to present it to get your laundry back.

Remember the adage " No tickeey, No launly"?

SSU - Sorry I can't comment on the 100% Egyptian cotton sheets because I've only bought EC towels (have laundered well). As for purchasing linens in general.... I've found it to be more confusing now because there aren't too many brand/manufacturers names that I recognize or trust anymore plus I haven't found the labels to be too helpful either. Good luck in finding something suitable!

Sunnysideup.....your post made me chuckle as well as the responses that you received! Laughing

Thread counts are confusing and some bedsheets are so outragiously expensive that I throw "thread-count" to the wind. It's a risk that one has to take because once you've bought 'em...you've got 'em! Surely ..they can't be returned after laundering and sleeping on them! My favorite bedding is flannelette and my favorite brand name has been "Ibex"...but the last time that I purchased flannel sheets by Ibex...they had polyester in them and were not the beautiful 100% cotton that they once were. I do not like the polyester content! Price goes up...quality goes down!...ugh!!

Anyway ...you all gave me a chuckle! Laughing eg..."No tickeey, No launly" lol!
