    Wahhhhhhhh FROST

Post by Willows on Fri Sep 16, 2011 9:54 am

Mid September...and "wahhhhhhh....frost" has devoured many of our gardens!

I'm ready to clean off my balcony in preparation for fall/winter! I've cut back my virginia creeper which was scaling my south wall on a trellis and was turning a beautiful autumn red. Leaves had begun to fall and scatter about my balcony as well as unto my neighbour's balcony below ...so I cut it back to lessen the "rubble". In the last two nights..my huge coleous froze...and so it's been hacked off as well. I've protected my herbs as well as my asparagus fern, which I bring indoors every year..as well as a 5" pot of red coleous. This coming week....I'll be preparing my pots for another year. Most are beginning to look rather shabby and starved for sunlight, so rather than freeze my fingers off in a couple of weeks....the job will be done A.S.A.P.!!

I am so sad today. This frost hit me like a ton of bricks. I was not expecting it so soon. I had no time to listen to the weather and the weathernetwork didn't warn me. Woooah is me.

I know a few people who believe that if you can get your hose flowing on a frosty morning, wash the frost off before the sun gets on the plants you can save them, for a little while longer. It has helped us some when we tried it. I think it has to be a light frost though.
