Are you too proud to bargain

Post by Willows on Mon Sep 12, 2011 4:14 pm

Are you too proud to bargain when you make a purchase?

This past Saturday...my friends and I were enjoying the outdoors and shopping in a popular "haunt" in Winnipeg. Business was slow, because the weather was beautiful and most people were busy outdoors or at their cottages or in their backyards...barbecueing.

That is a great time to take advantage of some "Bargain Shopping". The shops are "dormant" in their sales...so what better time to bargain!

So I cast my pride and humility aside when my eyes fell upon a beautiful silver ring...priced at $55.00. Hmmmm...."Is there a Seniors' discount today?" Well the sales clerk considered and she suggested that maybe she could give me a 10% discount. Hmmmm....being that it was such a 'slow' day....I negotiated for a further discount and I ultimately purchased the ring for $45.00!

Further down in the "sleepy" shopping area.....I spied a summer hat that I just loved! I examined it for imperfections and I immediately noticed that the inner band had flaws. The hat was priced at $19.99. After another negotiation....pointing out the flaw......I purchase the hat for $15.99. (I was able to repair the band in a matter of minutes after I returned home)

So all in all....I saved $14.00 through my bargaining!

Tell us all about your bargains!......or......

Are you too proud to bargain?

I do bargain, even at Sears they will give you a deal. I was looking at refrigerators last week so asked the sales guy if he could do better - yup - he said he could give me 20% off.. I was floored, large dept. stores don't usually deal. Very Happy

Let's all see what we can get for our money! How difficult is it to say...."I'm interested in this item...but there's a flaw here or there...or such and such a store sells it for less". All that the salesperson can say is "No"...or...."I'll check and see". Quite often,...there will be a bargain!

Good info Wuzfuz in your post here....

I will look for where I can get a lower price but rarely haggle. My youngest daughter did very well when she was shopping for her car and appliances. She researched on the internet, the news papers, visited the different stores/dealers and so on before buying. She used all the tactics Willows suggested.

Hubby doesn't bargain at all. He just goes and buys what he needs. Never will he search for the lower price but he is learning. Very Happy

I think that women are the better "Bargainers"

Men are usually too proud to bargain! What is it? An assault on their masculinity? As a teenager... I stood beside my mother bargaining for a dress in my small home-town-dress-shop!! She could not afford the price that was shown...and the store owner, could not afford to lose her sale. So she bargained...and if I remember correctly... she got about $15.00 off the price of her dress!

In the 1950"s that was a lot...but she did it...and I learned a lesson from my mother at that time!
